Press and Reviews

Here's what people are saying about Billy's music:

"In today’s jazz scene, one finds himself often being barraged with tidal waves of notes, chords, rhythms, and snaffoos that usually leave you walking away dazed and confused at best, deciding with yourself whether what you just heard was actually in fact, music. That profile has been broken, with trumpeter Billy Buss’ self released and debut record, 'Scenes From A Dream'. There is no extraneity, no unwarranted aggression or empathy, but instead, only the serenely intentional, effervescent gesture flowing fluently from the instruments from each highly defined musician on this intensely tranquil record. The songs range from delightfully swervy to painfully simple, and combine the naturalism of the groups acoustic instruments with a horizon of electronic ambiences, so that you find yourslef never really certain whether or not you’re dreaming. I do not recommend this record to jazz lovers. I instead recommend it to music lovers, those of you out there who are hunting for the new frontline, that takes you by the hand and shows you the way forward. Give this record a listen below, and if you like what you hear, mosey on over to Billy’s website and buy 'Scenes From A Dream'".

- Johnathan Stein @ Candid Music Group

"As a player and bandleader, he’s developing a book of original tunes and arrangements of jazz standards, looking to make his mark on the contemporary scene. Citing storied trumpeters like Miles Davis and Clifford Brown, Buss wants to make the most of his rarified training, aspiring 'to be somebody who embraces the collective understanding and keeps it moving forward.'"

- Andrew Gilbert - BerkeleySide

"The most innovative and fantastic music of today!! Billy's music speaks in many languages....to be able to reach many people; He is a musical astronaut who knows the earth may look the best from outer space."

Tiger Okoshi, Yamaha Recording Artist, Trumpet Faculty @ Berklee College of Music

"The sextet displayed a tightly knit ensemble sound, with some of the best moments coming as the frontline horns - trumpeter Billy Buss, and saxophonist Godwin Louis...unscrolled unison statements and passages of harmonically deft counterpoint...The trumpeter built musical arguments that linked the full range of his horn, from stratospheric high speed runs to rounded brass phrases that made it seem as if he had switched to flugelhorn in mid solo."
